Entering freshmen who have not successfully completed Algebra I & II, Geometry,
Pre-calculus, and Trigonometry in high school (or have not earned the necessary scores on the ACT or SAT to place into MATH 181 their first semester) are now required to enroll in the Pre-Engineering program and complete the necessary preparatory math courses within one year of matriculation. We also encourage students to consider attending summer school prior to the start of college strengthen their math skills.
The Engineering Advising Center staff can assist students with developing individual academic plans to gain the necessary preparation for calculus.
Once a student exhibits that they are ready to enroll in the Math 181 course, they are identified as a pre-major in their preferred discipline. For example, pre-engineering in the department of mechanical engineering.
The foundation of the Pre-Engineering program is a series of courses that are presented by co-facilitators: Dr. Robert Abella, Research Associate Professor, and Jeanette Sorensen, Director of Advising. These courses have the following learning objectives and outcomes:
Students who are in the Pre-Engineering program will be required to enroll in the following courses for their first semester:
EGG 101 – Introduction to Pre-Engineering and Computer Science
This course will provide pre-engineering and computer science majors with the skills, information, and knowledge necessary to promote academic success and career development. This course also reviews the various engineering disciplines and the careers it leads to in engineering and computer science. Throughout the semester there are guest speakers (industry, faculty, and student resources representatives), breakout sessions with peer mentors, group interactions, lab tours, and academic meetings with the Advising Center Staff.
EGG 101L – Problem-Solving Tutorial
This weekly, 2-hour, tutorial class will focus on problem-solving equations related to math, engineering, and sciences. The lab portion of the class does include a group project. This course is taken each fall and spring semester that a student is enrolled in preparatory courses for MATH 181.
